Collaborative-goal-setting

3.3 Collaborative goal setting between the speech pathologist, person with aphasia, their family and other team members should primarily focus on the goals identified by the person with aphasia and their family with consideration of assessment findings.

NHMRC level of Evidence: GPP

Rationale: Patient-focused goal setting should centre on the goals and preferences identified by the person with aphasia and their family with consideration to assessment results. Discussing goals and the goal setting process prior to formal assessment can facilitate the development of patient-focused goals, as well as the appropriate selection of formal and informal assessment processes. Establishing goals that are meaningful to the person with aphasia and their family may enhance motivation and engagement in the rehabilitation process.
